With the Oscars right round the corner, it’s time to have a look at which movies have the best chance of winning Best Picture. This is officially the very unpredictable awards race in recent memory. From the industry guilds, no movie won multiple prizes for the first time in history. Two of these victors Would You Ever Forgive Me? (the Writers Guild winners), aren’t Best Picture nominees at the 91st Academy Awards, completely flummoxing even those who have been predicting the Oscars for years. It is anybody’s ballgame, which adds an element of intrigue. In some ways, it’s more fun this way than at a usual year when one or two frontrunners emerge far ahead of the bunch.
Now, it is probably easier to say what won’t win, but we are going to try to make sense of the finest Picture field. Here are the eight movies in the running rated from most likely to least likely to choose the statue home.
Alfonso Cuar??n’s intimate, semi-autobiographical look at a middle class family’s maid’s life in Mexico City is rightfully one of the most acclaimed movies of 2018. It scored the most Oscar nominations of any movie this season (10) and has had lots of success in the precursors. Admittedly, most of its notable wins are for Cuar??n’s direction, however, Roma was also received Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the BAFTAs. This is a movie that just about everybody agrees is exceptionally crafted and well-acted, meaning it ought to do well on the preferential ballot. Academy members have enormous regard for Cuar??n, and Roma’s pair of acting nominations mean it struck a chord with all the actors division – the largest Academy branch there is.
